If you haven’t heard the news Toyota have officially announced the 2nd generation Toyota 86 & Subaru BRZ for sometime in 2021. This is pretty exciting as there’s no denying that with the 86 & BRZ being released back in late 2012, the car is feeling a little old now.
With the announcement so fresh what do we know so far?
- Toyota and Subaru will again jointly develop the second generation as was the case with the first generation.
- There are rumors that they will use the new turbocharged 2.4 liter flat-four found in several Subaru models.
- No exact word on when it will be released but it’s expected to be debuted within a year.
For years there has been speculation about a 2nd generation Toyota 86 & Subaru BRZ as they were very popular on the market but until now there was no official word and only slight revisions to the current model. Both Toyota and Subaru have made the announcement as part of their commitment to furthering their partnership including development of future electric vehicles.
Rumors from last year suggested that the new models would use Subaru’s turbocharged 2.4 liter flat-four seen in the Ascent, Legacy and Outback although take it with a grain of salt as it is just a rumor. If it is true then we could be looking at a nice improvement from the base 205 hp and 156 lb-ft torque to 260 hp and 277 lb-ft torque. The new 86 and BRZ will have a lot more driver assist systems available as options.
